Ganesh seated on elephant

Ganesh seated on elephant

"Ganesh, also called Ganapati, the elephant headed God of Wisdom and Success is the defender and remover of obstacles and has to be propritiated first before worshiping other Gods. He is one of the sons of Siva and Parvati. He is known as ""Sidhi Data"" or bestower of success in the work. His elephant head is believed to be an emblem of wisdom. His head often has one full tusk, while the other is broken. It is said that he lost it in a fight or that he used it to dictate the Maha-Bharata to the sage Vyasa. His mount or standard is a rat, a symbol in Hindu fable of the sagasity & trickery of this world, much like the fox in the west. So it is natural that the rat should first be conquered, then subdued and employed by the being who represents spiritual strength, whom he was bound to recognise as his superior, since his own cunning would tell him that Ganesh would prove a better guide than even his own perspicacity.11""H (28cm) : 14lbs : Bronze"

Dramatically sculpted contours evoke the true power of the Indonesian elephant. This example arrives adorned in a regal cloth, reflecting Nyoman Karsa's Balinese heritage. Hand-carved from mahogany wood, the statuette makes a rewarding acquisition for the worldly interior. Gajah ukir is Balinese for 'chiseled elephant.' Says Karsa, 'Outside is the natural world; the lives of animals depend on human behavior. Numerous hunters travel around the world endangering the lives of animals, while only a few people concern themselves with finding the best way to save them from entirely disappearing. By creating animal statuettes I offer an alternative to animal lovers.'

Phiparat Phirom sculpts the portrait in prized teakwood, detailing the muscular trunk and wrinkled eyelids. She then pounds ebony seeds to obtain a dark dye, which she paints on the sculpture. After drying in the sun, the wood takes on a deep brown hue. An iron plate at the back facilitates wall display.

Repousse panel, 'Elephant Family'

Repousse panel, 'Elephant Family'

The stability and nurturing essence of the herd emerges in this beautiful panel. Working in repouss, Thiva Boonnak depicts a family of elephants traversing a wooded landscape. She applies pitch to a sheet of aluminum and embosses the motifs by hand. Once the piece is engraved, she heats the sheet to remove the pitch and plunges it into a bath of boiling acid. She then washes it in a tamarind fruit solution and polishes it. The repouss panel is affixed to a panel of rain tree wood.
